What is Black Friday?

Black Friday in Canada has become one of the most anticipated shopping events of the year, offering deep discounts and exclusive deals from coast to coast. This shopping phenomenon, originally from the US, now marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season for Canadians looking to save big. Whether you're searching for electronics, fashion, toys, or household essentials, Black Friday is the perfect opportunity to snag great bargains and prepare for the festive season.

Origins of Black Friday

The roots of Black Friday trace back to the United States, where it refers to the Friday following American Thanksgiving. The term "Black Friday" is believed to have originated in Philadelphia, where it described the heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic that occurred on the day after Thanksgiving. Over time, retailers began using the day to offer substantial discounts, turning it into a national event. The name also refers to retailers moving "into the black" - meaning profitability - thanks to the surge in sales.

How Black Friday Dates Are Determined

Black Friday always falls on the Friday after the fourth Thursday in November, aligning with American Thanksgiving. For Canadians, this means the event typically occurs in late November. In 2026, Black Friday will once again kick off a flurry of sales, both online and in physical stores, across Canada.

Black Friday in Canada: Local Specifics

While Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated in October, Canadian retailers have fully embraced Black Friday at the end of November. Local stores and e-commerce giants like Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon.ca, Canadian Tire, Hudson's Bay, and more participate with their own unique promotions. Many local brands and independent shops also join in, offering exclusive deals tailored to Canadian shoppers.

• Retailers: Expect major chains and local stores alike to offer deals, covering everything from electronics and appliances to fashion and beauty.
• Payment Methods: Most stores accept credit cards, debit, and increasingly, digital wallets and buy-now-pay-later services like Afterpay or Klarna.
• Shipping: Many retailers offer free or discounted shipping within Canada during Black Friday. Be sure to check policies for remote locations or expedited delivery.
• Returns: Return periods may vary; some stores offer extended holiday returns, while others stick to standard policies. Always verify before purchasing.
• Deal Types: Look for doorbusters (limited-time, high-discount items), sitewide percentage-off sales, bundled offers, or exclusive online-only deals.

Cyber Monday and Black Friday Week

While Black Friday traditionally focuses on in-store deals, the rise of e-commerce has fueled the growth of Cyber Monday - the Monday following Black Friday - which spotlights online-exclusive offers. Many retailers now extend their promotions into a full Black Friday Week or even a month-long event, providing more opportunities to save. In 2026, expect hot deals throughout the weekend and into Cyber Monday, across categories such as tech, home, beauty, and more.

Safety and Smart Shopping Tips

• Plan Ahead: Make a list of desired items and set a budget to avoid overspending.
• Compare Prices: Use price comparison tools and check multiple retailers to ensure you're getting the best deal.
